Decathlon Subea Easybreath 900 Review: Strong Marketing, Limited Performance?

Decathlon Easybreath 900 – Quick Summary:

Price: €39.99 + €4.99 shipping = €44.98 total (source: decathlon.de)

Strengths: Solid build quality, appealing design, silicone nose for pressure equalization

Weaknesses: Snorkel too short, insufficient silicone padding, restricted field of view, no quick-release buckle

Verdict: Solid mid-range — but not true premium quality for the price

Transparency notice: This review is based on our own hands-on testing as well as publicly available product information and customer reviews from the manufacturer's product page. Testing was conducted in shallow coastal waters at Dibba Rock (Turtle Beach, UAE) in calm seas, clear water, and no waves.

The Subea Easybreath 900 by Decathlon is marketed as a premium evolution of the well-known Easybreath line. Pressure equalization, silicone nose, modern design — on paper, it sounds like a fully refined product. In hands-on testing, however, several weaknesses emerge that should not be present at this price point of nearly €45.

1. The Snorkel Is Too Short

The snorkel on the Easybreath 900 is noticeably shorter than on comparable full face masks.

When you tuck your chin to your chest while snorkeling — a completely natural head movement, for example when looking at something directly below you — the dry-top system comes into contact with the water very quickly. The ball rises, the snorkel closes, you inhale and get no air.

This is a design issue: A longer snorkel would simply prevent this. On the Khroom Seaview Pro Plus, the snorkel is dimensioned to leave enough clearance even when the head is tilted forward.

2. Only 0.5 cm Silicone — Not Enough Padding

In the nose area, there is only a thin silicone flap measuring roughly 0.5 cm (about 0.2 in) in height. This leads to pressure points and, when diving down, can cause pain — particularly around the plastic weld points where sufficient silicone material is missing.

Especially when equalizing pressure — the central selling point of the 900 — you squeeze your nose. With too little padding, this quickly becomes uncomfortable.

3. Restricted Field of View

The silicone nose is constructed high and protrudes visibly into the line of sight. It feels like permanently having a finger resting on the bridge of your nose.

▶ Video: View through the mask — the silicone nose clearly protrudes into the field of view

For a 180° panoramic experience, as advertised, this is a noticeable compromise. The Seaview Pro Plus solves pressure equalization with an integrated silicone nose that sits flatter and does not restrict the field of view.

4. No Quick-Release Buckle

A central quick-release buckle on the back is completely missing. Instead, the mask has to be adjusted using two separate straps.

Especially with long hair or in an emergency, an intuitive center buckle is an important comfort and safety feature. At this price point, it should be standard — the Seaview Pro Plus includes one as standard.

5. What Negative Reviews Say

Several 1- and 2-star reviews on the Decathlon product page reveal recurring issues:

"Membrane in the chin area unfortunately leaks."
Translated from German: „Membrane im Kinnbereich leider undicht."
"Unfortunately, water constantly seeped in around the head and chin."
Translated from German: „Leider drang ständig Wasser an Kopf und Kinn ein."
"Caution!!! Inferior quality."
Translated from German: „Vorsicht!!! Minderwertige Qualität."
"Pulling the straps tighter did nothing except cause uncomfortable pressure."
Translated from German: „Ein festeres Ziehen der Gummis brachte außer unangenehmem Druck nichts."
"Bought 2 masks and both leak from the top. Sizes were correct. We tried multiple adjustments. You have to pull very tight on the straps, leaving marks on the skin."

These are not isolated incidents. This is a recurring pattern.

6. Conclusion

The Easybreath 900 is not a disaster. Build quality and aesthetics are solid. But:

Weaknesses at a Glance

  • Snorkel too short — closes during normal head movement
  • Insufficient silicone padding — pressure points during extended use
  • Restricted field of view — silicone nose protrudes into line of sight
  • No quick-release buckle — cumbersome to put on and take off
  • Multiple customer reports of leaking

At a total price of €44.98, I expect top-tier performance. The Easybreath 900 delivers solid mid-range quality — but not true premium.

Looking for a full face mask with pressure equalization that doesn't have these issues?

The Khroom Seaview Pro Plus features pressure equalization via a flat silicone nose (no restricted field of view), a sufficiently long snorkel, thick silicone padding, and an integrated quick-release buckle. SGS-tested for CO₂ safety.
